Food packaging

What is Food Packaging?

Food Packaging is defined as a coordinated system for preparing food for transportation, distribution, storage, retailing, end use to satisfy the ultimate consumer with optimal cost and most importantly protecting the food from any kind of physical or chemical harm.

Food packaging is an essential part of the modern world; commercially processed food could not be handled distributed safely and efficiently without packaging. The World packaging organization states that about 25% of the food is wasted due to poor packaging. Thus it is clear from this point that good packaging plays an important role in the food industry.

Importance of Food Packaging

The basic roles of food packaging are to protect food from outside effect and damage, to contain the food and to provide consumers with the ingredients and the nutritional facts.

The main goal of food packaging is to contain food in an economical way that satisfies the industry requirements and at the same time consider the wants and needs of the consumers. Maintaining food safety and minimizing environmental impact are also one of its goals.

Protection/Preservation

Food packaging can retard product deterioration, retain the beneficial effects of processing, extend shelf-life, and maintain or increase the quality and safety of food. In doing so, packaging provides protection from 3 major classes of external influences: chemical, biological, and physical.

• Branding/Marketing and information

Another important reason for the package is that it gives consumers plenty of information about the product. A package represents the image of a product that stays in people's minds. It's what initially attracts consumer attention in a store.

Factors that affect a package's visual impact include shape, size and color. The information on the package communicates important data such as contents and contact information.

• Tamper indication

Willful tampering with food and pharmaceutical products has resulted in special packaging features designed to reduce or eliminate the risk of tampering and adulteration. Although any package can be breeched, tamper-evident features cannot easily be replaced.
Tamper-evident features include banding; special membranes, breakaway closures, and special printing on bottle liners or composite cans such as graphics or text that irreversibly change upon opening. Special printing also includes holograms that cannot be easily duplicated.

Tamper-evident packaging usually requires additional packaging materials, which exacerbates disposal issues, but the benefits generally outweigh any drawback. An example of a tamper-evident feature that requires no additional packaging materials is a heat seal used on medical packaging that is chemically formulated to change color when opened.

Things to be considered while food packaging

Easy to open

Packaging that is easy to open and does not pose harm must be considered. By staying at the top of the trends and learning about new options for the product being sold, the producer of the product will not only find new packaging designs that will make it unique but will also learn new ways to access all age groups.

Labeling Information

Nutritional facts as well as the expiry date on the package should be labeled. FDA regulation for food and labeling should be considered. Knowing what nutritional facts, expiry date of the food product, serving size and placement requirements of your food product is a must. These things should be known because they are to be labeled on the packaging.

Thorough research

The packaging of products especially food requires great consideration and a thorough research. The motive of the package should not be only to appeal the customer but also be able to preserve and keep the contents safe from the outside influences (chemical, physical and biological).

  Innovative designs

In case the product is to be held in the inventories the packaging should be changed from time to time. New and innovative designs should be created in order to make the product look updated. Because if the packaging does not change, the product will look outdated and less appealing and as a result the profit will go down and hurt the company.

• Target Audience

Target market should be considered i.e. the audience that is to be catered should be known. From the labeling on the package, to the material of the package and its environmental impact the product is the voice of the producer to the consumer.
If the product typically appeals the elderly people it must be made sure that the packaging is easy to open because old people tend to be weaker than the young generation. Same packaging technique goes for the children.

Materials used in food packaging

The most suitable packaging depends on the needs and the protection the food will require. Some provide a high degree of insulation and protection to limit bruising and compression as well as may not allow people to see the food while others offer high visibility but minimal protection. The designers need to think about several different issues when selecting materials such as keeping the food safe, and the individual packages may be stacked or loaded into larger cartons and pallets for protection.

When the food arrives at a destination, the aisles of the grocery store, the packaging must be so amazing that it should catch the eye of consumers while still offering protection. Packaging companies often have new products in development which include products with features such as temperature sensors to alert consumers the fact that food has been stored at unsafe temperatures.

Companies that seek new packaging should consider getting some samples and understanding the fact that either the packaging selected by them is reliable or not.

• For fresh foods like meat, it is common to see food packaging materials like baskets and trays made from Styrofoam, cardboard, or plastic

•  Aseptic food packaging is available for products like sterilized kinds of milk, canned food, and soups.

•  For dry goods, cardboard and plastic cartons are very common while preparing foods like dried shrimps and scallops as they may require plastic or glass containers

•  Some other traditional methods of food packaging are still in use these days such as leaves and earthenware. Leaves are from the plantain or banana leaves.
